Will I lose my unsent text if a call comes in?
Answer the phone mid-text and your draft is still there. When a call rings on Opus1 Voice, Opus1.io closes the Messages panel without asking you to discard anything. After the call, select the SMS icon and Messages opens on the same conversation with your half-written reply and any photos still in the box. The draft lasts until you send it, refresh the page, close the tab, or sign out.

Overview
You're halfway through a text to a parent. Maya's mom asked whether 5:00 is open, you have the schedule on the left and the Messages panel on the right, and the reply is half written when the studio line rings.
Answer the call. You don't need to copy the text somewhere first, and Opus1.io won't ask you to throw it away. When you come back to Messages, the same conversation is open and your reply is waiting in the box.
Why: The front desk shouldn't have to choose between picking up the phone and keeping the sentence they were in the middle of. Without this, an incoming call would either sit unanswered while you finish typing, or cost you the reply and the photo you'd just attached.
What happens when a call rings
This applies to the Messages panel, the inbox that opens beside your current page when you select the SMS icon in the top right of Opus1.io, next to your profile.
- You're writing a reply in an open conversation, or a new text started with New message. You may have attached photos.
- A call rings on Opus1 Voice.
- Opus1.io closes Messages and opens Voice. You don't see the Discard message prompt.
- Take the call.
Your unsent reply stays attached to the conversation you were writing, on that studio SMS number. If you open a different conversation, you see that conversation's own reply box, not the text you were writing to someone else.
While the phone is ringing, Messages stays closed so the call stays in front of you.
If you were working on the full Instant Messaging page (Clients > Instant Messaging) rather than the panel, nothing closes. The page stays open during the call and your reply stays in the box on screen.
Finish the reply after the call
When the call ends, whether you answered it, declined it or missed it:
- Select the SMS icon in the top right of Opus1.io.
- Messages opens on the conversation you were writing.
- Your text is in the reply box, along with any photos you attached but hadn't sent.
- Finish the reply and select Send, or schedule it to go out later. Once it sends, the box clears.
You can also pick the reply up from the full page. Go to Clients > Instant Messaging, which opens on your conversation list, and select the conversation. The unsent reply is in the box there too. Moving from the panel to the full page using the panel's link to Instant Messaging also keeps the reply with its conversation.
Nothing goes to the family until you send. The parent never receives a half-finished text because a call came in.
If you were starting a new message
If the call interrupted a text you began with New message, reopening Messages takes you back to New message with everything you'd filled in:
- The person you'd picked is still in To.
- The text you'd written is in the box, along with any photos you'd attached.
Changing the person in To clears that text and its photos, because they were written for someone else. Pick a different recipient only when you mean to start a different text.
When an unsent reply is cleared
Opus1.io keeps an unsent reply only for as long as you have that browser tab open and stay signed in. A few actions clear it on purpose, and the ones that leave a conversation ask you first.
| What you do | What you see | What happens to the reply |
|---|---|---|
| Close Messages, open another conversation, select New message, go back to the conversation list, or select the Voice icon yourself, while a reply is unsent | Discard message: "If you leave this conversation, your message will be discarded." | Discard throws the reply away. Cancel keeps you in the conversation with the text. |
| Send the reply, or schedule it and the scheduled send succeeds | The box clears | The reply has gone, so there's nothing left to keep. |
| Select Send but Opus1.io can't send it, for example the message is over 2,000 characters | The text stays in the box and Opus1.io tells you why | Fix the problem and send again. |
| Refresh the page, close the browser tab, or sign out | Your inbox, with empty reply boxes | Unsent replies from that visit are gone. Opus1.io doesn't save them on the computer. |
| Switch to another staff login or another school | A fresh inbox for that login | Unsent replies stay with the previous login and aren't carried over. |
An incoming call isn't on this list. The call closes Messages without asking, and the reply is still there when you reopen it.
If a text does go out but the phone company can't deliver it, it shows in the conversation marked as failed rather than back in the reply box. See Why did my SMS fail to send, and how do I resend it? for how to send it again.
FAQ
I had replies started in several conversations. Are they all kept? Yes. Each conversation keeps its own unsent reply, and after a call Messages returns to the one you were writing. Opus1.io keeps unsent replies for the 20 conversations you were writing in most recently. Starting a 21st drops the oldest one.
I have Opus1.io open in two browser tabs. Which one has my reply? The tab where you typed it. Unsent replies aren't shared between tabs, so the other tab shows an empty box for that conversation.
Can Opus1.io save a draft so it's still there tomorrow? No. An unsent reply lasts for your current visit in that tab. If you need to write a text now and have it go out later, schedule it instead. See How do I schedule a one-time text to send later?
Can my teammates see the reply I haven't sent? No. An unsent reply lives only in your browser tab. Your teammates see the conversation, and they can see when you're typing, but the text reaches them only once you send it.
