What does "Plan doesn't allow hold" mean?

Can't pause a student's lessons and billing for the summer or a break? Opus1.io shows Plan doesn't allow hold when the enrollment was created from a payment plan with holds turned off. Turn on Can the subscription be put on hold? in the service's payment plan for future students. For students already enrolled, update their enrollment with Update or Batch Update, then place the hold again.

Overview

When you try to pause a student in Opus1.io and the hold fails, the full message reads Error scheduling subscription hold – Plan doesn't allow hold. This message is specific: the dates you chose and the student's enrollment passed every other hold check. The only thing stopping the hold is a single setting on that student's payment plan.

Why it matters: A hold keeps the student's enrollment, so they come back to the same subscription when the break ends. Without a working hold, the usual fallback is ending the subscription and enrolling the student again later, which takes more front desk time and puts the student's spot at risk while they are away. Fixing the plan setting once means every student on that plan can be paused for the summer, a vacation, or an injury without the extra work.

Staff, managers, and owners can place holds in Opus1.io.

Why the hold is blocked

A hold can only be placed when Can the subscription be put on hold? is on for that student's enrollment.

That switch lives on the payment plan, and here is the part that catches most schools: when a family enrolls, Opus1.io copies the payment plan onto their enrollment. From then on, Opus1.io reads the copy on the enrollment, not the plan on the service. So if holds were off when the student enrolled, turning the switch on for the service later does not reach that student. Their copy is still off, and Hold and Batch Hold keep stopping with Plan doesn't allow hold.

This is the same reason a price change on a service does not change what current students pay. The plan on the service is a template for new enrollments, and each enrollment keeps its own settings until someone updates it.

How to turn holds on and place the hold

There are two jobs here, and both usually need doing: change the plan so future students can be held, and change the existing enrollment so this student can be held now. Turning the switch on never places a hold by itself. After the enrollment is updated, you still choose Hold or Batch Hold and set the dates.

For students who enroll from now on
  1. Go to Settings > Services and open the service, for example your private piano lessons.
  2. Open Payment and edit the payment plan, for example Monthly Tuition.
  3. Turn on Can the subscription be put on hold?

  4. Save the plan.

Two plan types include this switch, and on new plans of those types it starts on:

  • Membership with recurring visits & payments, used for ongoing private lessons
  • Recurring Payment / Membership for Class, when the class bills monthly

Every enrollment created after you save the plan copies the new setting. Students who enrolled earlier still need the next step.

For a private lesson or class student who is already enrolled
  1. Open the client's profile and scroll to Subscriptions.
  2. Find the enrollment you want to pause. A student with two instruments has two enrollments, so check you have the right one.
  3. Choose Update.
  4. Turn on Can the subscription be put on hold? and save.

  5. Choose Hold on the same enrollment, set the dates, and click Place On Hold.

Plans that cannot be held

Some payment plans never offer the hold switch, so no setting change will clear the error. For these students, the alternative is to end the subscription and enroll the student again when they return.

Plan What Opus1.io shows
Tuition Table The Hold button is hidden on the client profile. Batch Hold returns Plan doesn't allow hold.
Membership with recurring payment on a membership, equipment rental, or facility rental service Plan doesn't allow hold
Yearly billing, Single Visit, Multiple Visits, Full Class Payment, or Membership with recurring visits and one-time payment Only monthly subscriptions can be put on hold

Other hold error messages

If Opus1.io shows a different message, the plan setting is not the problem. Each of these points to a date or status rule instead.

Message What to change
Only monthly subscriptions can be put on hold Holds apply to monthly billing only. Yearly, one-time, and lesson pack plans cannot be held.
Hold longer than allowed by plan Shorten the hold. The plan limits how long one hold can last, and the default maximum is 6 months.
Hold cannot start on first subscription month Start the hold in a later calendar month. A student who enrolled in May can be held from June.
Hold start date cannot be past Choose Hold starts now or a future start date.
Subscription already on hold This enrollment already has a hold scheduled or in progress. Wait until it ends before placing another.
Cannot hold after subscription end date End the hold on or before the date the subscription ends.
Cannot hold after session end date End the hold on or before the last date of the group class.
Hold end date is too far in the future End the hold within about nine months of today.
End date cannot be equal or before start date Pick an end date after the start date.

FAQ

Should I put the student on hold or end the subscription?
Use a hold in Opus1.io when the student is coming back to the same lessons and you know the return date. Hold dates cannot be changed once they are applied, so if the family is unsure when they will return, ending the subscription and enrolling the student again later is often cleaner.

Can a family put their own child on hold?
No. In Opus1.io, holds are placed by staff, managers, or owners from the client profile or the subscriptions report. Families cannot pause lessons from their own account, and Limited Staff do not see the Hold button.

Will the family be told about the hold?
By default, Opus1.io can email the family when you place a hold. Turn on Do not notify the client in the hold dialog if you would rather tell them yourself. There is no automatic email when the hold ends.

Can I change the hold dates after I place it?
No. Opus1.io does not allow a hold to be edited, extended, shortened, or removed once it is saved, so confirm the dates with the family first. How do I use subscription holds? explains what to do if the dates turn out to be wrong.
