How long does a call ring before voicemail?
Calls going to voicemail too fast, or ringing too long before anyone can pick up? In Opus1 Voice, the Send to voicemail after... setting decides how long a call rings. Choose 1, 2, or 3 hold greetings, which is roughly 30, 45, or 60 seconds with the standard greetings. Three is the default. Change it per location in Voice Calls Settings. Longer greetings make the ring longer.
Applies to: Owner (changes the setting); Owner, Manager, Staff (answer calls during the ring)

Overview
When a family calls your studio number during open hours, Opus1 Voice rings everyone taking calls for a set amount of time. After that, it moves the caller on to voicemail. That window is your front desk's only chance to pick up.
If the ring is too short, calls slip away. A manager finishing a conversation with a parent at the counter cannot reach the headset in time, and a prospect asking about summer lessons ends up in voicemail. If the ring is too long, a caller waits a full minute, assumes nobody is there, and hangs up without leaving a message.
Why: A call answered live becomes an enrollment far more often than a voicemail does. Setting the ring to fit how quickly your desk can actually answer keeps more of those calls with a person.
What the caller hears while the phone rings
While your location is open, an Opus1 Voice caller hears these, in order:
- The Initial greeting.
- About 10 seconds of ringing, while staff who are taking calls are notified.
- The Hold greeting, followed by about 10 seconds of ringing. This pair plays once, twice, or three times, depending on your setting.
- The ring ends. The call moves on to voicemail, to forwarding, or to a goodbye greeting. See What happens when the ring ends.
The seconds shown next to Send to voicemail after... cover everything from the start of the call up to step 4, including both greetings and the rings between them. They do not include the Unable to connect greeting or the time a caller spends recording a message.
How long each setting rings
With the standard greeting text, Opus1 Voice rings for about this long:
| Send to voicemail after... | About how long the call rings | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hold greeting | 29 seconds | A desk that would rather take a message than keep a family waiting |
| 2 hold greetings | 45 seconds | Most studios with one or two people answering |
| 3 hold greetings (the default) | 60 seconds | A busy front desk that needs time to finish with a family in person |
These are estimates. Opus1 Voice times a typed greeting by how long it takes to read aloud, so a longer or shorter sentence moves the total by a few seconds. A recorded greeting counts for its full length, so a long recording makes voicemail start noticeably later.
Each option in the dropdown shows the estimate for the greetings saved on that location, for example 3 hold greetings (about 60 s). Once you customize your greetings, trust the dropdown over this table.
ℹ️ Note: If a location was set to more than three hold greetings before, Opus1 Voice now rings it as three.
What happens when the ring ends
When nobody picks up in Opus1 Voice, one of three things happens:
- Forward incoming calls when nobody answers is on and a forwarding number is saved: Opus1 Voice forwards the call to that number. The caller does not hear the voicemail tone.
- Allow voicemails is on and the call is not forwarded: the caller hears the Unable to connect greeting, then a tone, and can leave a message of up to five minutes.
- Voicemail is off and the call is not forwarded: the caller hears the Unable to connect greeting, and the call ends. By default, that greeting says, "We are sorry, our staff is currently unable to answer your call. Please try again later."
Forwarding takes priority over voicemail. If you turn on every forwarding option for a location, Opus1 Voice switches Allow voicemails off, because no call would ever reach it.
How to change the ring length
Each location has its own Opus1 Voice number and its own settings, so repeat these steps for every location you want to change. Only Owners can edit Voice Calls Settings.
- Open Locations / Rooms and select the location.
- In Voice Calls Settings, click the pencil icon to edit.
- Under Voicemail, set Send to voicemail after... to 1, 2, or 3 hold greetings. Each option shows about how many seconds it rings for this location.
- Turn on Allow voicemails if callers should be able to leave a message.
- Under Greetings, edit the Initial greeting and Hold greeting if you want to fine-tune the length. Typed text and uploaded recordings both count toward the time.
- Check What happens on a call, which shows the steps a caller goes through and when voicemail starts.
- Save.
To send unanswered calls to a cell or answering service instead of voicemail, use Call forwarding and turn on Forward incoming calls when nobody answers. The full setup is in How do I set up call forwarding in Opus1 Voice?
Ringing staff phones at the same time
Some schools have Also call my phone turned on. It rings chosen staff members' own phones alongside Opus1 Voice, so someone teaching in a back room or stepping out to the parking lot can still catch a call.
Also call my phone never changes when voicemail starts. The caller hears the same greetings and rings, and voicemail comes at the same moment whether or not any phone is set to ring.
Each phone's delay can be at most 30 seconds. Opus1 Voice also holds every delay early enough that the phone rings for at least 9 seconds before voicemail. If you shorten the ring, check What happens on a call afterward, because a phone that started late now has less time to be answered.
Calls that skip the ring
Calls that arrive outside business hours, or while the location is explicitly closed for a holiday or other closure, do not go through the greetings and rings above, and the Send to voicemail after... setting does not apply to them. Those callers hear your outside-hours or closed greeting instead. Opus1 Voice forwards them instead if Forward incoming calls when outside business hours or Forward incoming calls when explicitly closed is on.
The exception is Accept incoming calls. If anyone has it turned on in Opus1 Voice, the studio counts as available, so an after-hours or holiday call follows the full ring described in this article.
FAQ
Can each location ring for a different length?
Yes. Each Opus1 Voice location has its own Send to voicemail after... setting and its own greetings. A main studio with a staffed front desk can ring for a full minute while a satellite location goes to voicemail after about 30 seconds.
Does this setting change when call forwarding starts?
Yes. Forward incoming calls when nobody answers starts at the same moment voicemail would. With 1 hold greeting, Opus1 Voice forwards the call after about 29 seconds; with 3, after about a minute.
Can I make the phone ring longer than about a minute?
Three hold greetings is the most Opus1 Voice allows. A longer Hold greeting adds time to every repeat, so a longer typed greeting or recording is how to stretch the ring further. Check the seconds shown in the dropdown after you save the new greeting.
