How do I set or change when a credit expires?
Extend a make-up credit, bring back an expired one, or give a new credit a deadline, all from the client's profile in Opus1. When you add a credit, turn off Never expires and choose a Valid until date. To change one later, open See all credits, select Update on the credit, then pick a new date or turn Never expires back on. Expired credits come back the same way.

Overview
Every credit on a client's account in Opus1 either lasts until it is used or expires on a date you choose. That date is what turns your make-up policy into something Opus1 enforces for you. If your studio policy says make-ups must be taken within 60 days, an expiration date means nobody at the front desk has to remember that, and a family can't book a make-up against a lesson from last spring.
Without an expiration date, credits stay open indefinitely. That is generous to families, but unused credits pile up, and every one of them is a lesson your school still owes. Expiring credits keep that number predictable. The trade-off is that a family will sometimes find a credit has lapsed, which is why Opus1 also lets you extend a credit or bring back an expired one as a goodwill gesture.
This article covers setting and changing the date on one credit, from the client's profile. Owners, managers, and staff who can add and update credits can do this. Families can use their credits, but they can't change when a credit expires.
ℹ️ Note: Make-up credits issued automatically after a cancellation get their expiration date from the service's cancellation settings, not from this screen. To change how long those credits last for everyone, see Understanding Cancellation Makeup Credit Settings: Timing, Validity, and Limits. Changing that setting does not change credits already on a client's account; update those one at a time as described below.
Add a credit with an expiration date
- Open the client's profile in Opus1.
- In the Credits section, select Add credit.
- Enter a Reason. This is required, and it becomes the credit's label, so make it something your staff will recognize later, such as "Make-up for March 12 snow day."
- Choose the kind of credit:
- Monetary credit. Leave Service credit off and enter an Amount. Give monetary credits to the payer, usually the account manager, because they are applied when an invoice is paid.
- Service credit. Turn Service credit on, then choose the Service and the Visit count. Give service credits to the person who takes the lesson, which may be the account manager or a dependent. A service credit can be used to book an appointment or enroll in a class.
- Decide whether the credit expires. Never expires is on by default. Leave it on if the credit should stay available until it is used.
- To set a deadline, turn Never expires off. A Valid until date appears, already set to 30 days from today. Change it to any date from today onward.
- For a service credit only, check Not valid before. This is the first day the credit can be used, and it starts as today. Move it later only if the credit should stay unusable until then, for example a credit that should only apply once fall lessons start.
- Select Add.
The credit now appears on the client's account in Opus1 with valid until and the date you chose.
💡 Tip: Valid until and Not valid before work as a window. A credit with both set can only be used between those two dates. If a family says a credit they can see won't work, check whether today falls inside that window.
Change or remove an expiration date
You can change the date on any credit that hasn't been used yet, including one that has already expired.
- Open the client's profile in Opus1 and select See all credits. The profile itself lists only a few active credits, so an older or expired credit may not show there.
- If you are looking for an expired credit, or a service credit whose Not valid before date hasn't arrived, turn off Show only active credits.
- On the credit, select Update.
- Change the date:
- To set or move a deadline, turn Never expires off and choose a new Valid until date. The date must be today or later.
- To remove the deadline completely, turn Never expires on.
- Select Update.
The change applies to that credit only. Other credits on the same account in Opus1 keep their own dates.
Bring back an expired credit
Once a credit's Valid until date passes, Opus1 marks it (expired). An expired credit can't be used to book a lesson or to pay an invoice, and it drops off the short credits list on the client's profile. It is not deleted.
To make it usable again, follow the steps in Change or remove an expiration date: find the credit with Show only active credits turned off, select Update, and either choose a future Valid until date or turn Never expires on. The credit is available again as soon as you save.
This is the quickest way to handle a family who missed their make-up window for a good reason, such as an illness or a family emergency, without issuing a brand-new credit.
⚠️ Warning: Credits marked (used) or (deleted) have no Update action, so their dates can't be changed. If a family needs a replacement for a used or deleted credit, add a new one.
FAQ
Will a family get a reminder before a credit expires?
They can. Opus1 credit reminders are set on each service and email the family a set number of days before a service credit expires, with a link to book. See How To Use Credit Reminders to turn them on.
Can families see when their credit expires?
Yes. When a family chooses a credit while booking or paying in Opus1, a credit with a deadline shows Expires and the date, and one without a deadline shows Never Expires.
Can a parent change or extend their own credit?
No. Families can use their credits in Opus1, but only your staff can add a credit or change its expiration date.
I changed how long make-up credits last on a service. Why didn't existing credits change?
The validity period on a service applies to credits Opus1 issues after you save the setting. Credits already on a client's account keep the date they were issued with, so update any that need the new date one at a time from the client's profile.
