How do I rejoin a Voice call after refreshing my page?

Refreshed the page in the middle of an Opus1 Voice call? The caller is not hung up. They hear silence for about 20 seconds while the same browser tab reconnects you on its own. If it does not, open the Voice panel, select the call that reads Answered by you under Active calls, and press Accept before the 20 seconds run out.

Overview

Opus1 Voice runs in your browser, so the call lives in the tab where you answered or placed it. Refresh that tab and the audio stops. That used to mean the family on the other end was cut off in the middle of asking about summer lessons or a make-up for Tuesday.

Opus1 Voice now holds the caller for a short time instead, so you can come back to the same conversation without anyone having to dial again.

Why: A parent who gets cut off mid-call often does not call back. Holding the line for a few seconds turns an accidental refresh into a brief pause rather than a lost conversation.

This applies to Owners, Managers, and Staff who take calls in Opus1 Voice. It covers:

  • An incoming call you answered in the browser
  • An outgoing call you placed, once the other person has picked up

What happens when you refresh mid-call

Refreshing ends the audio in that tab, but Opus1 Voice does not hang up on the caller. Instead:

  1. The caller stays connected and hears silence. There is no message telling them what happened.
  2. Opus1 Voice holds them for about 20 seconds.
  3. When your page comes back, the same tab puts you back on the call.
  4. If you are not back by the end of the 20 seconds, the call ends.

Ending the call yourself is different. If you press End call, Opus1 Voice hangs up right away and does not hold the caller.

💡 Tip: As soon as your audio comes back, tell the caller you are back. They have been sitting in silence and may not know whether you are still there.

If your internet drops instead

A short blip in your connection often does not end the call at all. The audio cuts out for a moment and comes back.

If the connection stays down long enough for the call to drop, Opus1 Voice tries to reconnect the tab once you are back online. In practice, your browser can take most of the 20 seconds just to notice the connection is gone, so a call dropped by a longer outage usually ends before you can rejoin it. If that happens, call the family back from Opus1 Voice.

How to get back on the call

Let the same tab reconnect you
  1. Stay in the tab where the call was connected. Do not close it, and do not open a new one for the call.
  2. Let the page finish loading.
  3. If your browser asks whether Opus1.io can use your microphone, choose Allow.
  4. Wait. Opus1 Voice opens the Voice panel and reconnects you without you pressing Accept.

Automatic reconnection only happens when the page comes back within about 15 seconds. If it takes longer, for example because Opus1.io asked you to sign in again, you can still pick the call up yourself until the full 20 seconds have passed.

Refreshing a second time does not buy you more time. The 20 seconds started when the first refresh dropped your audio, so a second refresh only uses up what is left.

Pick the call back up yourself

If the page has loaded and you are still not on the call:

  1. Open the Voice panel and look under Active calls.
  2. Find the call that reads Answered by you.
  3. Select that call.
  4. Press Accept.

Do this while the caller is still holding. Once the 20 seconds have passed, the call has ended and the row can no longer be picked up.

⚠️ Warning: The call only reconnects in the tab where it was connected. A new tab, a new window, or a different browser will not reconnect you on its own.

When you cannot rejoin

If Opus1 Voice cannot put you back on the call, you will see one of these.

What you see What it means What to do
Could not rejoin the call. The call has ended or is still connected somewhere else. The 20 seconds ran out, or the call is still connected in another tab or on another device. Call the family back from Opus1 Voice.
Audio device unavailable. Check that a microphone and speaker are connected, that this site may use the microphone, and that this browser supports calls, then try again. Your browser could not reach a microphone or speaker after the refresh. Allow microphone access for Opus1.io, check your headset, and press Accept again if the caller is still holding.
The call reads Answered by you on phone You took that call on your phone, not in the browser. Nothing to rejoin. Refreshing Opus1.io does not affect a call you are taking on your phone.
The call reads Answered by and a teammate's name Someone else answered that call. Only the person who answered can rejoin it.

Rejoining also needs Accept incoming calls turned on in the Voice panel, with the location that took the call selected under Accept incoming calls for. If that location is not selected, the call will not appear under Active calls for you to pick up.

If the microphone message keeps coming back, the setup steps in Voice Best Practices cover browser microphone permissions and choosing the right headset.

FAQ

I closed the tab by accident. Can I still get back on the call?
Opus1 Voice will not reconnect a new tab on its own. Open Opus1.io again straight away and look for the call under Active calls. If the 20 seconds have already passed, call the family back.

Is it safe to open Opus1.io in another tab during a call?
Yes. Opening or switching to other tabs does not end the call. Only refreshing or closing the tab the call is connected in drops your audio. Voice Best Practices explains how to keep your microphone and speaker consistent when you work across several tabs.

Should the caller hang up and call back?
No. Ask callers to stay on the line if they hear a short silence. If the call does end, call them back from Opus1 Voice rather than waiting for them to call you.
