Can siblings have separate invoices?

Yes. Opus1.io bills every child on their own invoices, even when brothers and sisters share the parent who pays. Siblings land on one invoice only when they are enrolled together in a single checkout. To charge a different card or a different parent for each child, set a different Payer on each child's subscription. Enable combined payments puts separate invoices on one card charge without merging the invoices.

Overview

When a family has two or three children in lessons, sooner or later someone asks how the bills will look: one invoice for the household, or one for each child? In Opus1.io it is one for each child. Every student's enrollment creates its own subscription, and every subscription creates its own invoices.

That default suits most studios, and some families depend on it. A homeschool charter or another program that reimburses tuition usually wants an invoice with one student's name on it. Parents who live apart may each pay for a different child. A family may want the younger child's lessons on a different card. Each of these starts from separate invoices, and this article covers the three things you can change around them: who pays for each child, which card is charged, and whether separate invoices are paid in one charge.

Why: One invoice per student keeps each child's charges, discounts, and payment history readable on its own, which is what a charter, a co-parent, or your front desk needs when a billing question comes up.

Which option to use

Start from what the family is asking for. In Opus1.io, every option below except a shared checkout leaves each child with their own invoices.

What the family needs What to do What happens to the invoices
A bill for one child, for a charter or reimbursement program Nothing to change. Enroll each child in their own checkout and download that child's invoice PDF One per child
A different card for each child Set a different payer on each child's subscription One per child
One charge on their card statement Turn on combined payments Still one per child
Two parents sharing one child's tuition Add a secondary payer to that child's subscription One invoice, split 50/50
A discount for the second child Use sibling discounts The discount appears on the second child's invoice

How Opus1.io bills each student

A family in Opus1.io is made up of one or more account managers, usually the parents, and one or more dependents, usually the children taking lessons. The account manager who pays is the payer, the person whose card or bank account is charged.

When you enroll a student in private lessons or a group class on a recurring payment plan, Opus1.io creates a subscription for that student. The subscription issues the invoices: the first at enrollment, then one for each billing period after that. Each line item names the student it belongs to, so opening one child's profile shows only that child's charges.

Two children with the same payer therefore still get separate invoices for their own lessons, memberships, and tuition. A student enrolled in two services gets one invoice per subscription as well. The full billing cycle is covered in How are invoices generated from subscriptions?

To hand a charter or reimbursement program a bill for one child, open that child's profile, find the invoice in the Invoices section, click Details, and download the PDF. Families can download their own invoice PDFs the same way from their account. The steps are in How do I download a PDF of a client's invoice?

When siblings share one invoice

Siblings share an invoice in Opus1.io only when you enroll them together in one checkout and all of these match:

  • The same payer
  • The same class
  • The same payment plan
  • The same dates
  • The same payment method

That checkout invoice lists each student. If anything differs, such as different classes, different plans, different payment methods, or enrolling at different times, Opus1.io creates a separate invoice for each enrollment.

So when a family needs one invoice per child, for example for a charter that accepts only one student's name per invoice, enroll each child in their own checkout rather than together.

Tuition plans that price by how many classes a student takes roll that student's classes onto one invoice for that student. Brothers and sisters on that kind of plan still each get their own.

Charging a different card or parent for each child

Autopay in Opus1.io charges the payer's default payment method. Other cards saved on the payer's profile are kept as backups and are not charged automatically. That means one parent cannot have one child's tuition on one card and the sibling's on another: every subscription that parent pays for goes to their default card.

To charge a different card for each child, give each child a different payer. Say Maria pays for Ava's piano lessons and David pays for Leo's guitar lessons:

  1. Make sure the second parent is an account manager for the child. Only the student or one of the student's account managers can be a payer. If David isn't linked to Leo yet, open Leo's profile, click Update Profile, add David under Account Managers, and click Update. See How do I link dependents with their account managers?
  2. On Leo's profile, go to the Subscriptions section and click Update on his subscription.
  3. Choose David from the Payer drop-down at the top of the Update Subscription window.
  4. Click Update at the bottom of the window to save.

Leo's invoices are now billed to David and charged to David's default card, while Ava's stay with Maria. Check that the new payer has a payment method on file first, or the next autopay charge will fail.

Putting separate invoices on one charge

Some families want the opposite: separate invoices, but one charge on their card statement. In Opus1.io, Enable combined payments does this.

When autopay runs, Opus1.io charges once for all the invoices that share the same primary payer, the same due date, and the same location. The family gets one receipt email listing the line items from every invoice in that charge. Each invoice stays a separate record on its own child's profile, so you still see one invoice per student.

A few things are never combined:

  • Payments that are not autopay. A charge your staff run by hand, or an invoice a family pays from their own account, goes through on its own.
  • Invoices at different locations, even for the same family on the same day.
  • A secondary payer's share of a split bill.

Combined payments is available with Opus1 Payments. Email finance@opus1.io to have it enabled.

Leave it off if each invoice should be charged on its own, for example when a family matches each child's tuition against a separate reimbursement. With it on, remember that the combined receipt lists every child in the charge. A family who needs a one-student document for a charter should use that child's invoice PDF, not the receipt. More detail is in Combined Transactions.

Splitting one child's bill between two parents

Add Secondary Payer solves a different problem in Opus1.io. It keeps one invoice for the child and splits each autopay charge 50/50 between the primary payer and the secondary payer, and each of them gets a receipt for their half. It does not create a second invoice, and each subscription can have only one secondary payer.

Use it when two parents share the cost of the same child. When each parent pays for a different child, set a different payer on each subscription instead, as described in Charging a different card or parent for each child. The steps for a secondary payer are in How to Split Auto-Pay Between Two Payers.

Sibling discounts on separate invoices

Separate invoices don't switch off sibling discounts. Opus1.io treats the sibling with the oldest active subscription as the original, and the discount applies to the other siblings' subscriptions. It shows up as a line on their invoices, not on the first child's. Setting the discount by payment plan or on one subscription is covered in How do I enable sibling discounts?

FAQ

Can I put all my siblings on one family invoice? No. Opus1.io has no setting that rolls every sibling's tuition into one household invoice, so each child keeps their own. Combined payments is the closest option: one charge and one receipt for the family, with the invoices still separate.

Do siblings have to be charged on the same day? No. Monthly tuition invoices in Opus1.io are due on the 1st, but you can move the autopay charge on each subscription separately, up to 30 days before or after the due date, from Update on that subscription. Moving the charge date doesn't change the due date.

What happens to the sibling discount if one child stops lessons? Ending one child's subscription stops only that child's invoices. In Opus1.io a sibling discount applies only while the student has a sibling with an active subscription, so if just one child is left enrolled, that child no longer qualifies for it.
