Can I discount a subscription that's already on hold?

Can't add or change a discount for a student on a summer break or other pause? Opus1.io locks the subscription's recurring discount from the moment a hold is saved until its end date passes, even before the pause begins. A discount already there keeps applying. To lower a bill now, use ADD DISCOUNT on the open invoice. For a new recurring rate, change it after the hold ends, or end the subscription and enroll again.

Overview

A subscription hold pauses a student's lessons and billing for the dates you choose, on a private lesson or monthly group class subscription. While it is in place, Opus1.io recalculates the invoices that overlap those dates. To keep that math stable, Opus1.io also freezes the payment plan details on the enrollment, and the recurring discount is one of them.

This article covers the recurring discount on the subscription: the one you set at checkout with Add Discount, or later under Update with the Discount toggle. It does not cover a one-time discount on a single invoice, which a hold does not block.

Why it matters: families often ask for a lower rate at the same moment they ask for a break, for example a reduced fee for the month they come back. If you know a discount change is coming, make it before you click Place On Hold. Once the hold is saved, the subscription discount cannot be touched until the hold has ended.

Owners, managers, and staff can update subscriptions in Opus1.io. Families cannot change a discount or a hold from their own login.

What a hold locks

The lock starts the moment the hold is saved, not on the hold's start date. A hold scheduled for next month locks the discount today, exactly as a hold that is already running does. It lifts once the hold end date has passed and Opus1.io clears the hold.

You can tell a hold is saved from the client profile. Under Subscriptions, the enrollment shows the hold's start and end dates, and the Hold button reads Hold Scheduled and does not open.

Click Update on that enrollment. A banner across the top of the window reads Payment plan details cannot be changed while on hold, and these discount controls are greyed out:

  • Discount toggle
  • Discount type, amount or percentage, and the discount amount
  • Reason
  • Discount should expire and Valid until

The same lock covers the plan price, How much should be charged?, and the sibling discount setting on that subscription. In Opus1.io, Price per visit stays editable, because visit-based plans use it to work out the bill for a partial month on hold.

Other subscription settings still save normally: autopay, payment reminders, the payer and secondary payer, billing location, and the recurring invoice note.

What happens to a discount that is already there

Placing a hold does not remove a recurring discount. In Opus1.io:

  • The discount stays on the subscription for the whole hold.
  • Invoices the subscription creates during and after the hold still include it.
  • When the hold recalculates an invoice that overlaps the hold dates, it reduces the already-discounted amount. A full billing month inside the hold usually drops to $0. A partial month is reduced for the hold days only.

You also cannot turn the discount off so the family pays full price during a partial month. Removing a discount is locked the same way adding or changing one is.

Paid invoices are not refunded to the card when the hold recalculates them. If the family already paid more than the new amount, Opus1.io adds a monetary credit to the payer's account. The billing side of holds is covered in How do I use subscription holds?

Which fix to use

Opus1.io gives you three ways to charge a family less while a hold is saved. Pick the row that matches what the family needs.

What the family needs What to do Changes the recurring discount?
A lower amount on a bill that is already open Add a discount to that invoice No
A new recurring rate that should start before the hold ends End the subscription and enroll again with the new discount Yes, on the new enrollment
A new recurring rate from the return date onward Wait until the hold ends, then update the discount Yes

Lower one open invoice

A one-time discount lives on the invoice, not the subscription, so a hold does not block it.

  1. Open the payer's profile. That is usually the parent, not the student.
  2. Under Invoices, click Update on the invoice.
  3. Click ADD DISCOUNT, enter a Reason and the amount to take off, and save.

The discount applies to that invoice only. The next invoice comes out at the subscription's regular rate. Only Open invoices can be discounted this way, so this does not work on a Closed, Voided, or Processing invoice. The full steps, including how to handle an invoice the family already paid, are in How do I change the price for just one or two invoices?

Set a new recurring discount now

Opus1.io cannot edit a saved hold, so the only way to put a new recurring rate on this student before the hold ends is a new enrollment.

  1. Open the client profile, find the enrollment under Subscriptions, and click End.
  2. Book the student's recurring lessons again, or enroll them in the group class again, starting on the day they will actually return.
  3. At checkout, click Add Discount and set the new recurring discount. A discount on the old subscription does not copy across.
  4. Finish enrollment, and check the total before you confirm in case the plan adds a sign-up fee again.

Starting the new enrollment on the return date usually means you do not need a new hold at all. The time between the old end date and the new start date is the break, and nothing is billed for it. If you do need to hold the new enrollment, remember that a hold cannot start in the subscription's first calendar month, and set the discount before you click Place On Hold.

Ending and enrolling again also resets autopay, reminders, the secondary payer, and the recurring invoice note. The full list of what carries over is in Can I change, extend, or cancel a subscription hold?

Change the discount after the hold ends

On the day after the hold end date, Opus1.io clears the hold on its own. There is nothing to click to resume the subscription.

From then on, Update works normally again. You can add a recurring discount, change the one that carried through the hold, or turn it off, and open invoices update to match. The steps are in How do I add a recurring discount to a subscription?

If you plan to change the discount on the return date, leave yourself a reminder. Opus1.io does not send an email when a hold ends.

Batch updates skip held subscriptions

A Batch Update from the Subscriptions report that sets a discount does not change the discount on any subscription with a hold saved. Opus1.io leaves those discounts as they were and does not show a separate error for them. Other attributes in the same batch, such as autopay, still update.

After a batch that was meant to discount everyone, filter the report for the students you changed and open any enrollment showing hold dates. Each one needs one of the fixes under Which fix to use. The batch steps are in How do I batch update my clients' subscriptions?

Troubleshooting

The Discount toggle is greyed out. A hold is saved on that subscription and its end date has not passed. This is expected whether the hold has started or is still scheduled. Check the dates on the subscription row in Opus1.io.

A batch discount reached every student except a few. The students that were missed have a hold saved. Batch Update leaves their discount unchanged.

The hold has ended, but the discount is still locked. Check the end date on the row. The hold clears after that date has passed, so on the end date itself the subscription is still on hold. If the end date is in the past and the fields are still greyed out, refresh the profile and contact Opus1.io support.

FAQ

Should I use a hold or a discount? Use a hold when the student is stepping away from lessons for a stretch, such as the summer or a family trip. Use a discount when the student keeps attending but should pay less. If both apply, set the discount first and place the hold second.

Can Opus1.io support change the discount for me while the hold is on? No. The lock is part of the product, so support cannot override it. The options are the ones under Which fix to use.

Does a hold remove a sibling discount? No. A sibling discount that is already on the subscription keeps applying through the hold. The sibling discount amount on that subscription is locked with the other payment plan details until the hold ends.

Can I charge a reduced fee to keep a student's slot over the summer? Not by discounting a held subscription. A hold already brings a full month inside the hold to $0, and the discount is locked once the hold is saved, so the two cannot be combined into a reduced holding fee. If your school charges families to keep their lesson time over a break, contact Opus1.io support before you place the hold.

Can a family change their own discount or hold? No. Families can pay invoices from their own Opus1.io login, but discounts and holds are set by owners, managers, and staff.
