Can I close for one service type but not another?
Closed for private lessons but group classes still meet, or the other way round? An Opus1.io closure shuts the whole location for every service, so leave Closed Hours / Days alone. On the main schedule, filter to the services that are off, switch to day view, and use Batch Cancel. To stop families booking one service online, turn off Can visitors see this service? and Can clients see this service?

Overview
A common case: the studio is closed for private lessons on a teacher in-service day, but the Saturday ensemble still meets in the same building. Another is a camp week where group classes are off and private students keep their regular times.
Opus1.io cannot close a location for one service and leave it open for another. A closure belongs to the location, the same way open hours do. Closed Hours / Days have a date, a time range, and a repeat rule, and nothing else. There is no choice for private lessons, group classes, events, or a single service.
Why: A closure means the building is shut. Families cannot self-book anything there during those hours, and Set All As Closed marks every private lesson and class date inside the window Closed. A guitar ensemble and a private piano lesson at the same studio are both at that location, so one closure covers both.
So the answer is to leave the location open and act on the lessons themselves. Opus1.io groups services three ways, and the steps below work for any of them:
| Service type | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Appointment | Private lessons booked one student at a time |
| Group Class | Group classes, camps, and other fixed-date series |
| Event | Recitals, workshops, and other one-off events |
A membership that is only a charge, such as dues or an instrument rental, has no lesson on the calendar. Neither a closure nor a cancellation changes that charge.
Which path to use
Pick the row that matches your day. Most studios in this situation need the second row.
| What you want | Use this in Opus1.io |
|---|---|
| The whole location is shut for everyone: a holiday, a snow day, a break | Closed Hours / Days on the location, then Set All As Closed. See What a location closure covers. |
| One kind of lesson is off for a day and another still meets at the same location | Leave the location open. Filter the schedule to the services that are off, then Batch Cancel them. See Cancel one kind of lesson for a day. |
| Families should stop booking one service online, and booked lessons stay | Turn off Can visitors see this service? and Can clients see this service? on that service |
| One teacher should stop being booked for one service, and their other services stay bookable | Edit that teacher's Available Hours/Days and list only the services that stay |
| The programs meet at different locations and only one place is shut | Close only the location that is shut |
⚠️ Warning: Unavailable Hours/Days on a teacher cannot stand in for a one-service closure. A block makes that teacher unavailable for every service they teach, at every location. The location on the block only changes how the calendar displays it.
What a location closure covers
Who: Owner. Closed hours are part of the location settings, and only owners can edit locations.
Once Closed Hours / Days are saved on a location in Opus1.io, online booking stops offering that time for private lessons and group classes, and new recurring lessons skip it. Lessons already on the calendar stay Active until an owner selects the red warning beside the closure and clicks Set All As Closed.
That button includes every lesson at the location whose start time falls inside the closed window, whatever the service:
- Private lessons and group class dates are both included. The Location Closure window counts them separately, and the one button closes both.
- A partial-day closure, such as "closed after 3:00 PM," covers every service whose lesson starts inside it. A 4:00 PM private lesson and a 4:00 PM class are both closed. A 2:30 PM lesson that runs past 3:00 PM is not.
- Lessons at a different location stay scheduled.
Why it matters here: If you add a closure for a day when some lessons still meet, families cannot self-book those lessons online, and Set All As Closed would mark them Closed too. That is why a one-service day off is handled on the schedule instead.
For billing, teacher pay, and how to undo a closure, see Why are lessons still scheduled on my closed dates?
Cancel one kind of lesson for a day
Who: Staff, Manager, Owner.
Use this when, for example, private lessons are off for an in-service day and group classes still meet in the same rooms. Batch Cancel in Opus1.io changes only the active lessons in the schedule view you are looking at, so the filters do the work of choosing which service stops. Filter first, and use day view so a whole week is not included.
- Open the main schedule and switch to day view on the day that is off.
- Click Show filters, open the Service filter, and select only the services that are off. Select each private-lesson service, or each group class, you mean to stop.
- Check the filters shown above the calendar. Only the services that are off should be listed. Remove any service you want to keep.
- Click Batch Cancel (the X icon).
- Enter a Cancellation reason. Families see it when you notify them, and it labels any credits that are issued.
- Choose what families receive, using the table below.
- Turn on Do not notify the participants (Clients & Staff) if you will write to families yourself. Otherwise add a notification message.
- Leave Remove from calendar off. Turning it on permanently deletes the lessons from the calendar, and that cannot be undone.
- Click Proceed With Batch Cancel.
| Your policy for this day | Don't issue credit(s) | What the family gets |
|---|---|---|
| The lessons are made up | Off | Whatever that service's staff cancellation setting gives: a makeup credit, or on a per-lesson plan, an invoice that no longer charges for the lesson |
| The lessons are not made up | On | No makeup credit |
A batch cancel is always a staff cancellation, and canceled lessons show as $0 in the Opus1.io payroll report. Each service has its own staff cancellation setting, so piano lessons can issue credits while voice lessons issue nothing after the same day. Did my students get makeup credits after a closure? shows how to check that the credits you expected were created.
If Opus1.io reports that no lessons will be canceled, the day or the filters have no active lessons in them. Adjust the filters and try again.
💡 Tip: To drop a single group class date for every student while the series continues, open that class date from the schedule and choose Remove Scheduled Date, then Continue with removal. Leave Remove future scheduled dates off unless the rest of the series is ending too.
What families and teachers see
The two halves of the day look different to families once you are done.
| Who | What they see in Opus1.io |
|---|---|
| Families whose lessons were canceled | A cancellation notice with your message, unless you turned notifications off. Any makeup credit appears on the student's profile. |
| Families whose lessons still meet | Nothing changes. Their lessons stay on the calendar and in their portal. |
| Group class students on a canceled date | They stay enrolled in the class. Only that one class date is canceled. |
| Teachers | The assigned teacher is notified along with families, unless notifications are off. Canceled lessons count as $0 in payroll. Lessons that still meet are unchanged. |
| New families booking online | The location is still open, so open times stay bookable unless you also hide the service or change teacher availability. See Stop new bookings of one service. |
Stop new bookings of one service
Who: Manager, Owner.
These settings only change what families can book next. Lessons already on the calendar stay until you cancel them with the steps in Cancel one kind of lesson for a day.
Stop one teacher being booked for one service
In Opus1.io, a teacher's Available Hours/Days decide which services families can book with them in each window. Piano hours do not have to offer a piano trial, and private-lesson hours do not have to include a group class.
- Go to Staff > All Staff and open the teacher.
- Open Hours & Pay.
- Edit each Available Hours/Days block that should keep running, and leave the service you are stopping out of its services list. Keep every service families should still book.
- Save the tab. Self-booking uses the saved hours.
Staff, managers, and owners can still book a service that is missing from a teacher's availability. Opus1.io may show a warning. For more on the teacher editor, see How do I edit a teacher profile in the Staff Multi-Editor?
If the teacher should skip that service on one date only, cancel the lessons already booked for that date instead. A block on Unavailable Hours/Days would also take away their other services that day.
Hide one service from online booking
- Go to Services and click Update on the service.
- On the General tab, click the pencil icon in the Details section.
- Turn off Can visitors see this service? (people who are not logged in) and Can clients see this service? (families who are logged in).
- Click Update Service.
Turning Can visitors see this service? on also turns Can clients see this service? on, so turn both off to hide the service from everyone outside your staff.
⚠️ Warning: A hidden service is not self-bookable for anything, including makeups. Families holding makeup credits for that service cannot book them online until you turn visibility back on. Staff can still book those makeups for them.
Deactivated is a stronger setting that hides the service from families entirely. Use it when an offering is retired, not for a single day off.
Hiding a group class stops new enrollment. Dates already on the class stay until you cancel or remove them.
When the programs meet at different locations
Who: Owner.
Close the location that is actually shut. A studio with group classes at one address and private lessons at another can add Closed Hours / Days to only the group-class location. In Opus1.io, lessons at the open location stay bookable and stay on the calendar.
Repeat the closure on each location that is shut. A holiday at two addresses is two closures, and each has its own Set All As Closed step.
FAQ
Can I pick private lessons or group classes when I add Closed Hours / Days? No. In Opus1.io the closure is part of the location's hours, so every service that meets there is included. Batch cancel the lessons that are off instead.
We close at 3:00 PM for a holiday. Can I close just the afternoon? Yes, as long as everything at that location stops at 3:00 PM. Add Closed Hours / Days for that date with a time range. Set All As Closed covers lessons that start inside the window, for every service. A lesson that starts at 2:30 PM and runs past 3:00 PM stays scheduled.
What if one room is closed and the rest of the studio is open? A closure cannot target a room. Move the lessons to another room, or filter the schedule to that room and batch cancel those lessons. See How do I change the room, teacher, or location for a day?
Who can do each of these? Owners add location closures. Staff, managers, and owners can batch cancel the lessons in the current schedule view. Managers and owners edit teacher hours and service visibility.
