1. Overview

Opus1 Payments supports Apple Pay and Google Pay as checkout options for families making online payments. These digital wallet payment methods are powered by Stripe and become available once Opus1 enables the feature for your school.

Digital wallets store a family's card securely on their phone, tablet, or computer. Instead of entering card details by hand, a family can confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, a fingerprint, or their device passcode. Payments are processed through Stripe the same way as your other card transactions.

ℹ️ Note: Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled by default for all new Opus1 Payments accounts. There are no toggles or settings to configure—these options appear automatically for families using supported devices and browsers.

2. What's New

What it Does

When enabled for your school, Apple Pay and Google Pay appear as options when a family adds a new card when self-booking, updating their payment method on file, or following a proposal sent from your school.

Families on supported devices see Apple Pay or Google Pay alongside manual card entry. Families on other devices simply see the standard card-entry form.

Why You'd Use It

Digital wallets offer families a faster, more convenient way to add a payment method. Instead of manually entering card details, families can complete the step with a single click using a card already saved to their device. This can reduce checkout friction and improve payment completion rates for your school.

3. How it Works for Families

Where Families See It

Apple Pay and Google Pay appear when a family adds a new credit or debit card. They do not appear when a family pays with an already-saved card or bank account (ACH).

Browser and Device Support

Whether a family sees Apple or Google Pay depends on the device and browser they are using:

  • Apple Pay typically appears in Safari on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has Apple Pay set up
  • Google Pay typically appears in Chrome and other supported browsers on Android Phones, Chromebooks, or computers that have Google Pay set up

A family will usually see one wallet option - the one that matches their device - not both. If their device or browser does not support a wallet, they will see the standard card-entry form only.

The Checkout Experience

  1. Family navigates to checkout on your school's payment page
  2. Supported digital wallet options appear automatically based on the family's device and browser
  3. Family selects their preferred payment method
  4. Family authenticates using Face ID, Touch Id, fingerprint, or device passcode
  5. Payment is processed securely through Stripe

💡Tip: Families do not need to do anything special to use Apple Pay or Google Pay. If their device and browser support these options, they will appear automatically at checkout for self-booking.

4. Admin Enrollment vs. Family Checkout

Apple Pay and Google Pay work beset when the family is using their own device. For example, if a parent is self-booking on their iPhone, Apple Pay uses the card stored in that parent's Apple Wallet.

If a staff enroll a client from the admin side, the screen is usually open on the school's computer or the staff member's device. In that case, Apple Pay or Google Pay would use the wallet on that device - not the family's wallet remotely. For that reason, digital wallets are not the recommended way to collect payment during back-office enrollment.

For admin-side enrollment, use one of these options instead:

  • Select an already-saved payment method for the payer
  • Enter the family's card details manually with the family's permission
  • Send the enrollment as a proposal so they can finalize the booking on their own device

The last option is the best fit when you want the family to use Apple Pay or Google Pay, and/or get them to add the payment method themself.

5. Requirements & Eligibility

To offer Apple Pay and Google Pay to your families, your school must meet the following requirements:

  1. Opus1 Payments - Your school must use a Opus1 Payments, powered by Stripe

  2. Live payment account - your Opus1 Payments account must be activated and able to process charges
  3. Feature enablement - mobile payments must be enabled for your account. This is done automatically for new Opus1 Payments accounts; reach out to support@opus1.io if you'd like to check your enablement.
